Fun fact: Did you know that St. Philip’s College is a historically Black college?
St. Philip’s College is a community college in the Alamo Colleges district, a well-known public school system in San Antonio. This quilt was made in honor of Artemesia Bowden, the founder of St. Philip’s College. It is made up of various photos; these include a portrait, Ms. Bowden with the students at her school, and pictures of the campus. The fabric is made of cotton, and the photos were printed onto the fabric. St. Philip’s College has had a large impact on San Antonio as an affordable institute of higher education. In fact, the branches symbolize the different paths of study at St. Philip’s college. The tree in the center represents Bowden and the roots she put in place for Black colleges to be more accessible in San Antonio. The leaves represent the students, whether they’re still attending, graduated already, or haven’t enrolled yet.
