Decades of Answering the Call
Lorrin Arrington Savage
2018
45x39 inches
Cotton fabric, cotton threading, felt blend batting and machine quilting
San Antonio is a military city, meaning that there are many bases and people serving the US here. This quilt honors Black servicepeople, whether they served one hundred years ago, even earlier than that, or are still enlisted. Decades of Answering the Call depicts three silhouettes saluting. The individual pictures inside of each silhouette are of people who have served in the military. Many branches are shown. For example, people in Navy uniforms can be found, and so can soldiers from the Army. It’s important to understand that African Americans have served in the military since before slavery was abolished.
