Fabric Queen

Deborah A. Moore Harris
2018
This quilt is a good example of scrap quilting, which is when multiple patterns of fabric are used. Scrap quilting creates a colorful effect and makes the quilt look more dynamic. This method has been used by Black quilters since before the nineteenth century, but it has changed a lot between then and now. Back then, quilts were literally made from scraps, and their main function was to keep the user warm. It’s clear to see from this quilt that this isn’t the case anymore; Fabric Queen is very decorative, and the cuts of fabric are intentional. The composition makes good use of the beautiful colors. They complement one another in a way that's purposeful but meant to look spontaneous. It’s exciting to see how quilting in San Antonio has changed over time.
